EVALUATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

BOARD POLICY - 5121

The Board of Education recognizes that assessments, grading, and reporting of student achievement are critical components of the educational process and essential to the goal of student ownership of learning.听

Assessments are integral to understanding and supporting student learning and development.听 Assessments should be used to inform instruction, provide feedback, and guide educational decisions to enhance student achievement.听 They shall measure proficiency on standards. 听 Common assessments should be implemented in a way that supports equity and access for students.听

Grades must be an accurate representation of student proficiency on standards, and based on clear and consistent criteria.听 Grades should be derived from multiple assessments or evidence of student learning to provide a comprehensive view of a student鈥檚 understanding.听 Teachers shall inform students and parents/guardians how听 student proficiency will be evaluated in the classroom.听 A grade assigned by the teacher shall not be changed by the Board or the Superintendent except as provided within Education Code 49066.

Regular and clear reporting is essential for keeping stakeholders informed about student progress and areas needing improvement. Reports should be informative and designed to support student development and parental/guardian involvement. Grade reports shall be based on a student's proficiency on the standards. Other elements that are not a direct measure of proficiency on the standards, such as attendance, effort, student conduct, and work habits, shall not be factored into the grade, but may be reported separately.听

The Superintendent or designee is responsible for ensuring that these practices are implemented effectively across the District.听 This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it aligns with the current educational standards, legal requirements, and best practices.听
