ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION - 5121
Assessments, grading, and reporting of student achievement are critical components of the educational process.聽 The following guiding principles form the basis for these procedures:
- Grades will reflect proficiency on the standards
- Grading scales and criteria are clear and consistent across site grade level (elementary)聽 and site course (secondary) teams
- Teachers of the same site grade level (elementary) and site course (secondary) teams collaborate to develop and implement common assessments*
- Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency on the standards
The Superintendent or designee shall inform teachers of the District's policy regarding grading, including expectations that grades shall be based on proficiency on standards and shall not include other factors.
Report cards displaying students' grades in each subject or course shall be distributed to parents/guardians at the end of each grading period. Parents/guardians shall be given the opportunity to meet or speak with their child's teacher(s) to discuss the grades and strategies to improve their child's performance.
Whenever a student misses an assignment or assessment due to an excused absence, per Education Code 48205, they shall receive a score that accurately reflects the student鈥檚 learning upon completion of the assignment or assessment. The teacher of the class from which a student is absent shall determine which assignments and assessments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the assignments and assessments that the student missed during the absence.
Secondary Schools
For each student in grades 9-12, the Superintendent or designee shall maintain a transcript recording the courses taken, the term that each course was taken, credits earned, final grades, and date of graduation.
Whenever it becomes evident to a teacher that a student is in danger of failing a course, per Education Code 49067, the teacher shall directly communicate with the student's parent/guardian or send the parent/guardian a written report.聽 At a minimum, notification for any student in danger of failing must occur at designated progress reporting periods.聽 The refusal of the parent/guardian to attend the conference, or to respond to the written report, shall not preclude the student from failing the course at the end of the grading period.聽
Definition:
