Assessment and Grading

ÌìÑÄÉçÇø schools use assessment, grading and reporting to create a clear picture of students’ academic progress. These tools are an important part of school because they help us understand what students are learning and help them see their own growth, which is a key step in taking ownership of their education.

Assessments and Assignments

We use assessments and assignments to support students’ learning in the following ways:

  • Gather information about where students are on their learning journey.
  • Give students helpful feedback on how to improve.
  • Plan our teaching to meet students’ needs.

Grades

A grade is a snapshot of what students have learned. Our goal is for grades to be:

  • Clear: Grades communicate where students are in relation to the learning goals.
  • Accurate: Grades reflect students’ level of understanding. They are based on multiple pieces of evidence.
  • Consistent: Teachers in a single grade level (elementary) or course (secondary) have similar grading practices.

Reporting Progress

Report cards are a snapshot of how students are doing in relation to the learning goals at the time of reporting.  Additionally, teachers will communicate information such as attendance, work habits, and citizenship.

Effective Communication

Assessments, grades, and report cards are part of the way we communicate student progress. Other forms of communication, such as feedback on assignments, electronic grade books, and conferences, are part of a comprehensive communication system.  As always, the best person for information about your student’s progress is their teacher(s).
