
University High School鈥檚 Science Team triumphed at the 33rd Regional Science Bowl competition, held this past Saturday at NASA鈥檚 Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This marks the team鈥檚 sixth win in eight years, and their third consecutive trip to the finals鈥攁n impressive record given the high level of competition among not only public schools but also private schools in the region.
This annual聽, hosted by NASA鈥檚 Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, is traditionally a Jeopardy-style competition meant to test students鈥 science knowledge.
An Exciting Competition Match
In the double-elimination rounds, the team faced off against Troy High School for a third time in an incredibly intense and exciting match. The outcome came down to the final question, where Troy answered correctly, narrowing the score gap. Ultimately, the victory was decided by the outcome of the bonus question, with University High School鈥檚 team securing the win.
鈥淭hese outstanding students showed determination, good sportsmanship and worked together, demonstrating the true spirit of a University High Trojan,鈥 said Chair of Uni鈥檚 science department and coach David Knight.聽 鈥淥ur students showed a depth of knowledge in each field of science. I am proud of how hard they worked and what they have accomplished.鈥
The Winning Team
This year鈥檚 team included:
- Sara Yu, Grade 12
- Angelina Yan, Grade 11
- Feodor Yevtushenko, Grade 11 - Team captain
- Timothy Chen, Grade 10
- Shloke Kamat, Grade 10
They competed against more than 20 other schools from the Southern California area and excelled at answering questions ranging on topics such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and space and earth sciences.
天涯社区's Strong Showing
Portola High School also participated in the competition and placed 4th鈥攁n impressive result in this highly competitive event.
Both teams prepared for months, studying and working together. Uni will now advance to represent 天涯社区 at the national competition in April.
